  • 0.9.1 - 7 Dec 99
Some great new features and bug fixes:
  • Fetching of stories from providers is now asynchronous. This means an end to annoying lockups while Headline Viewer waits for slow or offline servers to respond. Clicking on a provider name makes the provider current, and initiates (if necessary) a story fetch. The fetch is initiated if no content has been loaded or if the loaded content is older than the refresh interval specified for the provider. Thanks to the background fetching feature (see below),  content can be fetched before it is needed.
  • Headline Viewer can now load provider information "in the background," so that new information is made available even before you need it. Additional control of this background fetching is provided in the General tab of the Settings dialog. The Background Updating control has three values:

None If this option is selected then no background updating occurs. Story fetching occurs only when the user clicks on a provider name.
Visible Providers If this option is selected then background updating is performed for all providers in the visible portion of the Active Providers List. Headline Viewer will initiate and manage a number of  background fetches in parallel
All Providers If this option is selected then background updating is performed for all of the providers in the entire Active Providers List. Headline Viewer will initiate and manage a number of background fetches in parallel

  • A new "Windows" skin is now provided. This skin is available in the Skin Gallery, and is not actually a skin at all. When this skin is selected, Headline Viewer providers a native Windows look and feel, including a caption bar.
  • The old "Default Skin" is now the "Yellow and Blue Skin".
  • The Active Provider List is now scrolled to ensure that the selection is visible in the following situations:
    - On startup
    - After the use of the Settings dialog
    - After each automatic timer-driven flip
  • New Providers:
    Lark Farm
    allUSB
    Eclectic
    AppWatch
  • Removed Providers:
    Jacob's Angst
    Floach
  • Headline Viewer now issues an error message if it cannot load a seemingly valid skin. To avoid irritating and repetitive messages, errors are displayed the first time that the Skin Gallery is used, and when the F12 key is used to reload a skin that is under development.
  • The program's name is officially "Headline Viewer," not "Carmen's Headline Viewer." Various captions have been renamed to reflect this.
  • The To-Do List now has a close box. Closing the list automatically checks all of the items. Also, the user is directed to the Headline Viewer survey if they have not yet filled it out.
  • The To-Do List now works properly when the display is set to use large fonts.
  • Fixed a mislabeled category in the External Provider Lists tab of the Settings dialog.
  • Double-clicking on a provider's site image now visits the provider site.
  • Fixed some problems that would cause an empty article list if the information downloaded from the provider included badly formatted date values.
  • The Statistics tab of the Settings dialog now includes a "Chars Read" item. This field counts the total number of characters read from the network.
  • When the F12 key is used to refresh the current skin, the skin is now completely reloaded. Previously, only the images were loaded.
  • Fixed a problem where the skin "outline" was offset by 1 pixel down and to the left.
  • Fixed a nasty bug which would cause Headline Viewer to lock up on certain defective information fetched from a provider.
  • Fixed a glitch where the flip timer could go off right after a keyboard navigation of the Active Provider List, causing a jump.
  • The Help button is now hidden when the other buttons are hidden.
  • Fixed the widths of the article headers to eliminate a few pixels worth of gap.
