Some great new features and bug fixes:
  • Providers are now broken down into categories! This feature is controlled by the "Show Category List" option in the General tab of the Settings dialog. It is turned on by default. Note that the font which is set for the Active Provider List also applies to the Category List. The "Next Provider" and "Previous Provider" (arrow) buttons work within the current category, as does the automatic flip to the next provider. A given category is shown only if it is active and it contains one or more active providers. If all of the providers in a category are made inactive, then the category itself will be made inactive, and hence removed from the Category List.
  • When upgrading from a previous version, categories are automatically assigned for all providers.
  • When External Provider Lists are imported, providers loaded from the UserLand, GrokSoup, and StartsHere providers are stored within like-named categories. The confirmation message indicates the name of the category.
  • Background updating can be set to run within the current category.
  • Dropping an URL on to Headline Viewer adds the URL to the current category.
  • The Category List includes a Context Menu. It is possible to mark a category as inactive by right-clicking on it and choosing the "Make Inactive" command.
  • * The View submenu of the Context Menu now contains a Category List option.
  • The Providers tab of the Settings dialog now includes a Category control. The control indicates the category assigned to the selected provider or providers. Any number of providers can be assigned to a category by selecting them in the Providers list (hold down the Control key to and click on each one, or just click and drag) and then choosing another category. If the newly chosen category is not active then you will be prompted to activate it.
  • The Providers tab of the Settings dialog now includes a "Use Title" checkbox. The information provided by certain providers is in a form which makes the RSS title field of more value than the otherwise-preferred description field. You should not need to adjust this field in most situations.
  • Reduced memory usage by about 25% via URL compression.
  • The background updating is now smarter about initiating fetches. There is now a hardwired limit to the number of parallel fetches that are allowed. Some systems had problems when the number of outstanding fetches rose into the hundreds.
  • The Main Dialog is now properly updated after changing View Settings using the Settings Dialog.
  • A new skin, "Red and Black", is now included, courtesy of Mike Gunderloy.
  • Clicking on a provider in the Active Provider List will initiate a headline fetch if the provider appears to have no stories. This provides some additional resilience if the provider was temporarily unavailable for background fetching.
  • The builtin provider list is now sorted. This sorting is applied when Headline Viewer is started for the first time and when the "Add Default Providers" button is used in the Providers tab of the
    Settings dialog.
  • Fixed a tiny bug where the status bar in the External Provider Lists page of the Settings would not be hidden after a failure to load the provider list from the external provider.
  • The program can once again be closed using the "X" in the top-right and from the Control menu when running with the native Windows skin.
  • Removed a spurious error message that could occur on the first entry to the Skin Gallery in a session.
  • Added some error handling around the initial request to subscribe to the various mailing lists. We are still trying to nail down the root cause of the problem. If this happens to you, please
    let us know.
  • The resize cursors are no longer shown if the Main Window is both skinned and maximized.
  • Saving and loading the list of providers is now approximately 30% faster. The size of the saved file (chv_providers.xml) has been reduced by a similar amount.
  • The status line in the Providers tab of the Settings dialog is now changed to indicate that information is being fetched from a provider.
  • Fixed a problem where the Copy commands would sometimes fail to put new information onto the clipboard.
  • Fixed the tab order of the Help button in the Main Dialog.
  • Fixed a typo in the To Do List.
