Headline Viewer
Version 0.9.4 History

Headline Viewer home page
  • 0.9.4 - 11 Sep 2000
Some great new features and bug fixes:
  • New Skins:
    - Cedar Skin - Carved of the Best Cedar
    - Rough Rock Skin - Gray rock with rough edges
    - Chiseled Rock Skin - Gray rock with smooth outer edge
  • The General tab of the Settings dialog now includes a Startup group with the following new options:

Add Desktop Icon - Pushing this button creates a Headline Viewer icon on the desktop.

Add to Startup Menu - Pushing this button creates a Headline Viewer shortcut in your Startup menu so that Headline Viewer will run each time you log in or start Windows.

Add Quick Launch Icon - Pushing this button creates a Headline Viewer shortcut in your Quick Launch toolbar.
  • The View section of the General tab of the Settings dialog now includes the "Show Titlebar" option. This option is respected only when a skin is not being used. If unchecked, no Titlebar is shown for the main window. This results in a very clean and minimal display. The option is also available from the View submenu of the Headline Viewer context menu.
  • The skinning model has been revamped to increase flexibility and to allow for the development of more intriguing skins. The model now allows the strechable segments along the edges and within the main form to be composed of tiled images that are more than one pixel tall or wide in the stretchable direction. This makes it easier to construct textured skins. Full information can be found in the Headline Viewer Skin Creation Guide. Multiple bugs and glitches in the skinning system have also been cleared up.
  • The ESC (Escape) key can now be used to minimize the main dialog. This key, along with the existing keyboard navigation of the main window, allows you to rapidly scan through many providers and then dismiss Headline Viewer, while your hands never leave the keyboard.
  • Headline Viewer now includes drag-and-drop integration with mailing lists hosted at www.egroups.com. After you have subscribed to a list in the usual way, you can drag the URL of the list's home page on to Headline Viewer to create a provider which references the list.
  • The StartsHere external provider list no longer exists; the corresponding button has been removed from the settings.
  • Added better detection of the problem leading to the infamous "Error in Form_Load" message. The program now detects the absence of the Microsoft Scripting Runtime and asks the user to install it.
  • The automatic flip timer is now reset after a click or double-click on an article title, or an arrow-key selection change in the article list.
  • The Article list no longer gains an extraneous horizontal scroll bar when the vertical scroll bar is displayed.
  • Headline Viewer is now more efficient when writing out settings and providers after a change in the Settings dialog. The providers are not written out unless they were changed in the settings. This greatly improves the speed of an exit from the Settings dialog.
  • Headline Viewer should be more reliable on Windows 95. The settings which control the amount of concurrent network activity have been reduced to values which work better on Windows 95.
  • The "mailto:chvskin" link in the About box is now functional.
  • The "Fonts" section of the General tab of the Settings dialog is now named "Fonts & Colors".
  • The "Fonts & Colors" section of the General tab of the Settings dialog now includes the "Use Per-Provider Background Colors" option. When on (the default), the article list is drawn using its very own background color. When off, the article list is drawn using the Windows default background color.
  • In the Providers tab of the Settings dialog, exceptionally large images no longer overlap with other controls.
  •  Resizing the main window to a very small size no longer results in the "Error in Form_Resize" message.
  •  Added some better handling for text-mode providers:

    1. Empty records at the end of the data no longer result in the creation of empty articles.

    2. If the Text Format Spec for a text-mode provider is empty, then the default value "00,01,T" is used.

    3. If the TextFormat Spec for a text-mode provider does not include a "U" (URL) character, then the provider's Site URL is used instead.
  • The site image on the main dialog can be used to drag the dialog around when the Easy Move option is enabled. Right-clicking on the site image now produces the context menu.
  • System resource leaks when using skins have been plugged.
